Introduction

Although we typically spend our time looking at the Scion FR-S (and its siblings – the Toyota 86 & Subaru BRZ) here at Drifted, we know that many of our fans are tC owners and enthusiasts, and since they’ve been struggling with turbo kit advice, we’re more than happy to offer a helping hand.

Despite the tC not being rear-wheel-drive (with factory-backed race cars built specifically for competition use like Fredric Aasbø and Tanner Foust’s Formula Drift builds an obvious exception), the hot hatch has still gained immense popularity among numerous tuners on the tuning scene.

Throughout the years, there have been various performance parts like air intake systems, oil coolers, exhaust systems, fuel management systems, and after-market gauges on offer for the Scion tC. And with the completely stock engines only producing a mere 180 hp, these offerings from the aftermarket industry were essential to achieve the kind of performance improvement the typical tC buyer was longing for.

When it comes to turbo kits, there have been several exceptional offerings on the market over the years, from companies such as Dezod Motorsports, TurboToyotas, P-Tuning, Treadstone, and Why Industries.

Despite consistent popularity when it comes to tuning tC’s, these aftermarket company turbo kits have since ceased production or been discontinued, much to the dismay of owners who are in the quest for forced induction.

parking lot graffiti street

We’ve heard horror stories with Dezod customers, so we certainly don’t recommend hand your money over to them, as they seem to have a habit of running away from the issues.

Although these popular offerings from the most recognized brands are often commonly traded among owners and enthusiasts on the used marketplace, nothing beats the peace of mind when it comes to getting your hands on a brand new turbo kit and boosting the underpowered, normally-aspirated engines.

Other than obvious signs of wear such as shaft play, it’s difficult to tell what kind of life a turbo kit has experienced over its lifetime since the date of purchase.

With several of the used turbo kit components potentially at risk of flagging up defects, such as cracked manifolds, buying new is always our preferred method.

Both the 2AR and the 2AZ engines have tremendous potential, and it was great to see Papadakis Racing proceed with the 4-cylinder 2AR for Aasbø’s build, rather than following the typical V8 route that’s become so popular in motorsport racing these days.

If you’re interested to see what went into the 1,000 hp Toyota 2AR FD engine, then watch this epic timelapse video where they construct the powerplant from start to finish in just 90 seconds.

Capable of potentially dealing with a reliable 1,000 hp output, there’s no question that these incredible engines can put out insane figures for their size.

To get there, you’d need to carry out some significant modifications to the engine internals. However, in this guide, we’ll be keeping things simple and exploring the best turbo kits out there to achieve a reliable, everyday setup for your tC.

As always, when it comes to strapping a turbo to your engine, there are a few things to consider.

Firstly, you’ll want to get the car handling well. There’s no point achieving as much power as possible with your tC if it ends up sliding into a bush when you approach the first corner.

For that reason, you’ll need to take a look at an epic coilover setup to get the car handling correctly.

Turbocharger kits also require additional breathing mods to get them unleashing their full potential.

You’ll have even more gases to extract once your tC is turbocharged, which is why a larger bore aftermarket exhaust is going to be essential right away.

Once you’ve carried out the essential upgrades to get you started, it’s time to consider what kind of power you’re looking to achieve with your tC to decide which turbo kit is going to be best for your needs.

Some owners play it safe with their engine, and they typically opt for running about 8 PSI of boost.

There have been many well-documented long-term builds that have run flawlessly for tens of thousands of miles with 10 PSI, which is where the correct tuning pays off.

On the other hand, some have risked turning it up to 14 PSI, and while some were left regretting the decision, others have had excellent long-term results.

We would recommend looking to achieve around 8-10 PSI with your setup and having it mapped by a highly-regarded tuner for a perfect mix of long-term results, while also providing plenty of enjoyment in the process.

rolling shot photography

If you want to run beyond 14 PSI, then you’ll need to begin looking at carrying out extensive internal modifications, which is where the costs can very quickly add up.

On the bottom end, you’ll need upgrades such as low-compression pistons, forged rods, and upgraded sleeves.

For the top end, expect to port and polish the head and add oversized valves alongside stronger head studs and various other additions.

To run 15 PSI reliably, we would expect to have to fork out around the $10k region for an engine build.

Alongside the turbo option, there’s also the supercharger route, which could also be a consideration.

Toyota Racing Development (TRD) made an excellent kit for the tC, and it’s a shame they didn’t make a turbo to go alongside it.

However, most owners feel that the supercharger delivers underwhelming power on the tC, so the turbo route is the far more popular choice.

If you’re interested to know more, then make sure you head over to our turbocharger vs supercharger guide, where we put them head-to-head.

Once you’ve decided that the turbocharger route is right for you, which is a bit of a no-brainer on the tC, it’s time to determine what kit suits you best.

GReddy Scion tC Tuner Turbo Kit

greddy tuner

  • Manufacturer: GReddy
  • Fitment: 2004-05 Scion tC – 1st Gen
  • Value for money: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
  • Purchase link: Discontinued

Our comment: JDM legends GReddy have been a household name in aftermarket performance, putting out exceptional turbo kits for different vehicles and different platforms for many years. They’ve offered a reliable platform for Scion tC enthusiasts to appreciate.

Some owners have noted that they’ve had custom hot pipes made to optimize the performance fully, which may need to be a consideration.

With this GReddy kit, you can expect to achieve up to an additional 100 hp from the factory power, with significantly improved engine response.

GReddy has noted on their website that they have discontinued production of this kit, but there’s still plenty available through the various tuning stores in the US.

If you’re looking for an off-the-shelf bolt-on kit, we feel that this offering from GReddy performance products provides the best bang for the buck.

Although it may be worth considering upgrading the hot pipe further down the line, it’s not essential.

Manufacturer description:GReddy Turbo Kits for naturally aspired motors provides instant horsepower gains with less time and money while still providing room for upgrading for even more power!

GReddy turbo kits are specifically designed for optimal response and performance while maintaining daily drivability, comfort, and reliability. Each GReddy turbo kit is designed based off of a completely stock engine so each kit will come with all the necessary basics such as manifold, turbocharger, downpipe adapter, piping, hardware, and heat-shields“.

GReddy Scion tC Turbo Kit Features:

  • TD05H-18G turbo
  • SUS Manifold
  • Racing downpipe
  • Type 31V Intercooler
  • Piping, fittings, clamps, hoses, etc.
  • Fuel controller option separate

ATP Scion tC Turbo Kits

atp gt2876r

  • Garrett turbocharger power ratings:
  • GT2860RS – 250-360 hp
  • GT2876R – 280-480 hp
  • GT3071R – 280-480 hp
  • GT3076R – 310-525 hp
  • GT28RS – 350 hp

Our comment: ATP brings a slightly different offering to the market, which is up there with the best when it comes to quality on the market right now.

If you opt for the ATP kit, you’ll need to get the intercooler piping fabricated, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as it will allow you to choose an ideal company for the job.

With people often complaining about the piping on the ‘universal’ kits out there, and with the hot pipe issue of GReddy products, this could potentially be a blessing in disguise.

With a wide variety of turbo options available, ATP’s various setups will allow you to achieve different power bands, all the way up to 500 hp.

If you’re planning to get the power output to anywhere near 500 hp, you will, of course, need to think about significant engine upgrades.

ATP’s setup is a great choice that integrates some of the best Garrett turbochargers on the market, and it comes highly recommended, even if it isn’t a ‘full’ kit.

Manufacturer description:After months of testing and development with the 2AZ-FE engine combination, ATP has devised an upgrade system that is both elegant and simplistic while accepting no compromises in power potential or reliability“.

With POWER and RELIABILITY being the two key criteria for the development of the Scion tC turbo upgrade kit, they set out to test every possible hardware combination available“.

ATP Scion tC Turbo Kit Features:

  • ATP Turbo Cast Iron Turbo Manifold with 38mm wastegate flange
  • Steel braided lines and fittings for oil/coolant connections
  • Tial 38mm External Wastegate
  • Stainless wastegate discharge tube with downpipe re-route
  • All mounting hardware, gaskets and CNC machined fittings
  • 3.0″ Stainless steel downpipe w/stainless O2 housing

Turbo Specialties Extreme Scion tC Turbo Kit

turbo specialties

Our comment: Turbo Specialties often divide opinions, and its reputation in the Scion tC community is, unfortunately, no exception.

Although we appreciate their efforts, since they’re one of the few aftermarket brands that continue to provide a full kit for the Scion tC, you’re likely to need to carry out extensive modifications to ensure the perfect fit.

The Turbo Specialties kit is the better choice for our next three ‘budget’ options; however, it also comes with the highest price tag.

However, if you’re looking for a simple plug and play setup that isn’t going to require any modification, we’d recommend looking at the options above to save the potential hassle and money.

Manufacturer description:If you are looking for the ultimate in high performance – the extreme performance packages are for you. Providing the maximum horsepower for the very discriminating and still providing dependability for daily driving“.

Incorporating all the high performance equipment in the superior performance packages, these extreme packages all include an intercooler, pop off valve, extra injectors, and injection control unit, (The Brain)“.

Turbo Specialties Extreme Scion tC Turbo Kit Features:

  • T25 Turbo Ex. Manifold, Ex.Outlet, Down Pipe, Hardwares
  • Air Intake System, Intercooler and Pipework
  • Oil Return Hose, Oil Pressure Sus Stainless Braided Hose
  • Cold Water Stainless Braided Hose
  • Icu350, Bp9901 Blow-Off Valves
  • All hardware, pressure lines, hoses, clamps, and couplers included

Rev9Power Scion tC Turbo Kit

rev9power godspeed

Our comment: Unfortunately, the Rev9Power/Godspeed turbo kits have a similar reputation to the Turbo Specialties kits above and are thrown into the ‘Chinese kit’ category by tC enthusiasts.

In our experience, these kits are typically hit or miss, and they can often be useful for making a partially custom kit and selling some of the less desirable parts to enable custom fabrication.

It’s significantly cheaper than the Turbo Specialties kit, but it’s likely to need even more work to ensure ideal fitment.

Scion tC Turbo Kit Features:

  • Turbocharger Manifold Scion TC 2AZFE Motor (Cast) Ultra Durable
  • 7lb Wastegate (Adjustable)
  • Type-M Intercooler 20x6x2.5 Core Size (Overall Length: 28″)
  • T3 Stage 3 Turbocharger
  • Blow Off Valve
  • Oil Line, Oil Return Lines and All Fittings
  • Direct Fit 2.5″ Aluminum Intercooler Piping With Silicone & T-Clamps (With Map Sensor Flange Fitting)
  • T3 Downpipe Bolt Flange

FASTWAYRACER Scion tC Turbo Kit

fastwayracer

  • Manufacturer: FASTWAYRACER
  • Fitment: 2005-10 Scion tC
  • Value for money: 🔥🔥
  • Purchase link: Discontinued

Our comment: This kit from FASTWAYRACER is one of the best deals and by far the cheapest in our list, but it well and truly falls into the ‘Chinese turbo kit’ category.

We wouldn’t recommend running this kit, but we did want to provide an alternative option for those desperate and on a constant search to turbocharge their Scion tC on a thin budget.

FASTWAYRACER admits that it’s a universal piping kit provided here, so you’ll need to prepare for some drastic modification.

Unless you’re incredibly talented in the fabrication department, we can see this being an expensive mistake, but there’s a crazy amount of kit provided here for the price. It’s just a shame that it’s not likely to be worth the effort.

Manufacturer description:This turbo kit perfect upgrade your car and get more boost. Your car will gain 100-150HP if you set at 7-15PSI. Customers require upgrade the fuel pump, injector and ECU to tune the car if you set at higher PSI. This kit can max up to 350HP“.

FASTWAYRACER Scion tC Turbo Kit Features:

  • T3/T4 T04E .57AR Turbocharger
  • Cast Iron Manifold
  • 2.5″ 5-Bolt Downpipe Flange
  • 38mm Turbo Wastegate
  • 38MM Dump Pipe + Elbow Pipe
  • Oil Return Line
  • Oil Feed Line
  • Fuel Pressure Regulator
  • Boost Controllers
  • Oil Catch Tank
  • Turbo Timer
  • 2″ Boost & Air/Fuel + Oil Pressure + RPM Gauge

Our winners

Now that you have read through all of our Scion tC turbo kit options, let’s look at our winners:

Drifted Scion tC Turbo kit choice

Our Drifted Choice goes to the GReddy Scion tC Tuner turbo kit.

Our Scion tC Turbo Kit winner is the GReddy Scion tC Tuner Turbo Kit

It certainly hasn’t been the easiest of bolt-on turbo kits guides given the lack of choice on the market for the Scion tC, but for an overall package, you’re going to struggle to beat the GReddy Tuner Turbo kit.

It’s a shame that it’s now discontinued, but it’s not too late to get your hands on one.

Should you need spare parts further down the line, then there’s sure to be plenty floating around on the used market thanks to its popularity over the years.

While this is the best bolt-on all-rounder, our Premium choice coming up next is also a serious contender for those of you that don’t mind putting in a little extra work.

Premium Scion tC Turbo Kit choice

Our Premium award goes to the ATP Scion tC Turbo Kit

With a wide variety of options available, they have anything car enthusiasts like you could need to achieve power levels up to 500 hp from your Scion tC, assuming you’ve upgraded your internal components.

If this included an intercooler kit along with it, then we’d have no hesitation to hand it the Drifted Choice award.

But, given that you’re going to have to carry out some additional workmanship, it isn’t going to suit everyone.

We do believe that with a little extra time and money, the ATP is the best choice on the market right now, and if you can find a decent fabricator for the pipework, then you’ll be on to a sure winner.

ATP Scion tC Turbo Kit

Our Budget Scion tC Turbo Kit choice

Our budget award goes to the Rev9Power Turbo Kit

We’ve been disappointed by the budget offerings available for the Scion tC on the market today, and we would recommend spending the extra cash on our two other choices this time around.

We feel that the Rev9Power offers the best of a bad bunch for the price.

Given the Turbo Specialities price, which is far too close to the GReddy upgrades for what you get, we couldn’t justify handing it our budget award.

When it came to the FASTWAYRACER kit, sure, it’s cheap as hell, but it is just your average universal turbo kit, and you’re going to have to carry out a substantial amount of work to the piping to make it fit into the dimensions of your Scion’s engine bay.

Despite representing the best value for money, we wouldn’t be rushing to part with our hard-earned cash for any of the budget options here, and ‘buy cheap, buy twice’ unfortunately springs to mind.

Thank you for reading our Scion tC Turbo Kit guide.

Given the lack of new products, it’s been one of the more challenging turbo kit guides that we’ve written, but we hope to provide plenty of useful insight when it comes to turbocharging your Scion tC.

If our offerings don’t suit your specific needs, then we’d recommend taking a look at the used kits, which can often pop up on various marketplaces, as some of the discontinued high-quality products from various merchants of the past have the best reputations.

We wish you the best of luck with adding forced induction to your Scion tC, and don’t forget to send us photos of your build once it’s complete for the chance to be featured here at Drifted.

Scion was launched by Toyota as a direct effort to appeal to its younger customers by providing them with their own niche brand. Where Lexus was created by Toyota to appeal to the upper class, Scion was primarily focused on those that wanted an affordable new car with heaps of extras which still retained the cool factor and a huge range of tuning options.

The tC was Scion’s replacement for the phased-out Toyota Celica, which hit the showrooms in mid-2004 and immediately smashed all of the sales goals they’d set out. It appeared to be a hit with the millennial generation, and tuning houses across the world were working as quickly as possible to keep up with the demand for aftermarket upgrades.

Want to get your tC sitting right? Our Scion tC coilover guide was written just for you.

With a 160hp 2.4L VVT-i engine under the hood, it was capable of outpowering most other small coupes, especially as people begun squeezing extra ponies out with mods.

After some small facelift changes in 2008, the main update came when they launched a second-generation in 2010, with the 2.5-liter 180hp engine providing even more power than before. Unfortunately, this update would be considered a flop by Toyota, and despite further changes in 2014 and 2016, Toyota gave up on the Scion idea and ended the tC’s production in 2016.

As we fast forward to the present day, the huge range of selection on the used car market is great for those who are considering buying a tC. If you already own one and you’re ready to buy an exhaust, we’ve got the perfect guide to help make your choice.

Here at Drifted we rarely review FWD options, but we couldn’t ignore the love that the tC gets from owners, and with the likes of Fredric Aasbo throwing his customized RWD version to the walls in Formula Drift, we knew we had to help you guys find the perfect aftermarket parts.

An aftermarket exhaust is definitely one of the first modifications you should make to any car, it removes the restrictive factory exhaust and gives a much more impressive sound whilst improving flow and also freeing up some extra power.

Try not to get caught up in the power claims from our selection, exhausts will only offer a minimal amount and it’s far more important to get a setup which you love the look, and sound of. When watching YouTube videos, you’ll want to bear in mind that multiple variations (angle, camera, etc) can change how an exhaust sounds.

Axle-back exhausts are generally cheaper, but a cat-back will go from your catalytic converter to the tip, meaning there are even fewer restrictions, therefore slightly more power and a more awesome sound. Bear in mind that some cars may have had additional exhaust modifications carried out (headers, high flow cats, etc) when watching the videos.

There’s undoubtedly a huge range of options out there for the Scion tC’s’, but we’ve narrowed it down to make life easier when it comes to choosing from the best exhausts on the market. Here you’ll find all the information you’re going to need, along with images, prices, and videos to help make your decision easier.

Now that you know what you’re looking for, let’s take a look at our Scion tC exhaust selection!

ARK DT-S Scion tC exhaust

ark dts scion tc exhaust

  • Internal pipe diameter: 2.5″
  • Tailpipe configuration: Single 4.5″ tip
  • Primary exhaust system material: Stainless Steel
  • Fitment: Scion tC 2011-13
  • Manufacturer: ARK
  • Value for money: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Our comment: We kick off our list with one of the most expensive, yet often the most sought-after offering for the Scion tC. ARK bring their typically epic quality to the market with their more aggressive offering than the GRiP below.

The DT-S provides a far more aggressive sound than the stock exhaust, but it isn’t too loud to wake up the neighborhood every time you want to drive home. Chances are that since the gases are flowing a little better, you may see a slight additional performance gain compared to the ARK GRiP.

Manufacturer description: “With the many varieties of exhausts that ARK has to offer, the DT-Series premium exhaust provides the perfect combination of sound, style, and performance. The ARK DT-S premium exhaust has been carefully engineered and manufactured to ensure 100% satisfaction.”

“With T304 Stainless steel, quality mandrel bends, and flawless welds, the quality of the DT-S exhaust is unrivaled. The DT-S exhaust is designed with tone control and multi-layer sound compression materials to provide the perfect pitch you are seeking. This exhaust not only provides great tone, but also is dyno proven to maximize performance and engine response.”

ARK GRiP Scion tC exhaust

  • Internal pipe diameter: 2.5″
  • Tailpipe configuration: Single 4.5″ tip
  • Primary exhaust system material: Stainless Steel
  • Fitment: Scion tC 2005-13
  • Manufacturer: ARK
  • Value for money: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Our comment: ARK’s second option is the GRiP, which tops the DT-S price, but many owners will argue that it’s money well spent. This is the quieter of the two offerings which again offers an aggressive growl but it’s closer to stock sound levels, yet still provides a noticeable difference.

For those of you that are looking for a premium product and only want the best out there for your tC, then either of these ARK choices are going to be perfect for you.

Manufacturer description: “The ARK “GRiP” exhaust system provides the serious enthusiast a combination of sound, style, and quality craftsmanship. As a leader and innovator in aftermarket exhaust systems, ARK are highly recognized for their exclusive designs, proven HP/Torque performance gains, and their significant ARK exhaust note sound that is resonant, pure, rich, and deep. All ARK exhaust systems are constructed with only high quality premium materials using state of the art equipment and technology.”

“At ARK Performance they invest most of their time in research and development in such areas as exhaust gas flow, piping size, back pressure, inner core structure, fitment and sound by their finest engineers in the automotive industry. With their passion, dedication, experience and knowledge about cars, racing, and lifestyle, ARK bring you the finest in aftermarket exhaust systems.”

  • Internal pipe diameter: 2.25″
  • Tailpipe configuration: Single 4″ tip
  • Primary exhaust system material: Stainless Steel
  • Fitment: Scion tC 2004-10
  • Manufacturer: Magnaflow
  • Value for money: 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Our comment: A lot of owners are convinced that this is the best sounding option for the tC, however, it is one of the louder choices so you’ll want to consider that if it’s likely to cause a problem.

It comes in at under half the price of the ARK exhausts and has many happy owners that have no issues with the louder sound on a daily basis. You can always get silencers fitted further down the line if it causes an issue.

Manufacturer description: “As a market leader, MagnaFlow proudly manufactures all of their products in the USA using premium components and the latest technology. Their products range from direct-fit converters and Catback systems to universal mufflers and builder’s kits for fabricating your own custom system.”

“With over 30 years of experience, MagnaFlow has learned that automotive enthusiasts always want more. They’ve designed their mufflers to have a free flowing, straight through design with a perforated stainless steel core, mesh wrap and acoustical fiber fill to deliver that smooth, deep tone.”

TRD (Toyota Racing Development) Scion tC exhaust

  • Internal pipe diameter: 2.25″
  • Tailpipe configuration: Unknown
  • Primary exhaust system material: Stainless Steel
  • Fitment: Scion tC 2011-16
  • Manufacturer: TRD (Toyota Racing Development)
  • Value for money: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Our comment: Toyota’s very own in-house racing development tuning shop brings another highly reputable offering with the TRD muffler. Unsurprisingly, this has been a hit with fans, especially those that like to stick with OEM+ products.

Featuring a subtle yet substantially deeper growl, it enhances the stock sound to make the 4-banger acoustics far more pleasing. If you’re after perfect quality and fitment with a nice, clean tuned sound and no rasp, TRD are likely to provide the ideal product for your needs.

Manufacturer description: “The goal is to get the burnt gasses out of the engine and exhaust system as efficiently as possible. These gasses travel through the exhaust port into the exhaust manifold, then travel through the exhaust pipe to the catalytic converter and muffler, and finally vent to the environment.”

“Any obstacles or severe “bends” in the system can affect back-pressure, slowing the flow of exhaust gasses. Therefore, an exhaust system that reduces back-pressure improves efficiency and can create additional power output.”

GReddy Revolution RS Scion tC exhaust

  • Internal pipe diameter: 2.5″
  • Tailpipe configuration: Single 4.1″ tip
  • Primary exhaust system material: Stainless Steel
  • Fitment: Scion tC 2011-16
  • Manufacturer: GReddy
  • Value for money: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Our comment: Japanese tuning legends GReddy enter the tC market with their infamous Revolution RS Exhaust. Unsurprisingly, this cat-back system has been another huge hit with owners and you can count on always GReddy for quality.

With this large-tipped, it’s relatively quiet when cruising around town, but if you plant your foot to the floor it’ll come alive. It’s a far more controlled volume level compared to others like the Magnaflow, and won’t get you pulled by the cops unless you’re hooning.

Manufacturer description: “The Revolution RS for the second generation Scion tC features large diameter 2.5” mandrel-bent piping which extends all the way to the front of the vehicle’s main catalytic-converter for maximum flow.”

“Dyno testing shows gains throughout the usable power band. The aggressively angled compact Revolution RS muffler is aided by an extra-large oval front resonator to help control sound quality. Like all GReddy Revolution RS systems the fully hand-welded 304 Stainless-Steel exhaust carries a Limited Lifetime Warranty.”

HKS Hi-Power Scion tC exhaust

hks scion tc exhaust

  • Internal pipe diameter: 2.4″
  • Tailpipe configuration: Single 4.5″ tip
  • Primary exhaust system material: Stainless Steel
  • Fitment: Scion tC 2004-16
  • Manufacturer: HKS
  • Value for money: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Our comment: We go straight from one JDM tuning legend to another, as HKS bring their competitor. It may seem substantially cheaper than the GReddy, but this is an axle-back system. It’s still a fantastic product at an impressive price.

This brings a slightly unique slanted look with it pointing slightly outwards and upwards. If you’re down with that, you can always consider having custom piping made to turn it into a cat-back. On it’s own, this provides a nice subtle deep rumbling sound but with no unwanted rasp. When cruising down the freeway it quietens up to make it an ideal choice for a daily driver so that you can have normal conversations with your passengers.

Manufacturer description: “Inspired and designed from endurance and GT racing in Japan, HKS developed its Hi-Power Exhaust system for both turbocharged and naturally aspirated applications. HKS has incorporated this new race inspired offset muffler and piping design into many street applications, which offers a greater flow and higher-PRM power gains due to the less restrictive design. This is achieved by eliminating unnecessary bends for the straightest exhaust path.”

Our comment: Megan Racing are known for producing affordable, yet respectable quality products for a huge range of vehicles within the tuning scene and the tC is no exception. Their ‘Drift Spec’ style exhausts come in polished or burnt tip variations.

Cheap exhausts are often the loudest, and the Megan is certainly one of the more extreme options in our list. It does come with a removable silencer which sits in the tip, but we’re not a huge fan of the look when fitted. With that being said, many people love it and find it makes it a really versatile exhaust which is both loud or quieter when you want it to be.

If you’re looking for a cheap cat-back, it’s a bargain.

Manufacturer description: “Megan Racing’s new Catback system is the Drift Spec Style. Designed to give it a more aggressive look the exhaust is angled up and outward. Depending on each car and each bumper design, the exhaust will vary upon the direction and angle that it sits.”

“Megan Racings strongest products, the Catback System is made of SUS-304 Stainless Steel with a fully polished surface, CNC machined flanges and mandrel bends. Its aggressive styling, and deep, strong tone are just part of the MR Catback characteristics. It also serves to improve horsepower, torque and overall performance with its straight-through design.”

Agency Power Scion tC exhaust

agency power scion tc exhaust

  • Internal pipe diameter: 2.25″
  • Tailpipe configuration: Single 4″ tip
  • Primary exhaust system material: Stainless Steel
  • Fitment: Scion tC 2011-13
  • Manufacturer: Agency Power
  • Value for money: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Our comment: Another hugely popular cat-back comes from Agency Power at a fantastic price. This is a little more than the Megan Racing alternative, but if you have the extra cash to spare we’re sure you won’t regret it.

Combining great looks and quality with an awesome sound, it has a nice, deep growl and is definitely louder than some, but does transform the sound of the car. It may be a little loud, but other than that it’s a perfect all-around choice.

Manufacturer description: “Agency Power has always engineered products to provide a gain in performance, while offering a stylish alternative to enhance your vehicles appearance. The latest product from the Agency Power line up is this complete catback exhaust system for the Scion TC.”

“What separates this from the competition is that the exhaust is a complete catback. Most exhausts on the market are only axle back. This system is complete 304 stainless steel with thick flanges. The piping is all 2. 25 inch in diameter and fully polished. The exhaust includes amazing tig welds, mandrel bends, precision hangers, and a resonator for the perfect sound.”

  • Internal pipe diameter: 2.25″
  • Tailpipe configuration: Single 4.25″ tip
  • Primary exhaust system material: Stainless Steel
  • Fitment: Scion tC 2011-16
  • Manufacturer: Borla
  • Value for money: 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Our comment: It’s the cheapest exhaust so far in our list, but that certainly doesn’t mean it’s the worst quality. This axle-back offering is a fantastic offering for those of you on a budget that are after a subtle upgrade to your tC.

This adds a subtle growl over the OEM exhaust note when you put your foot down, but it’s near-silent when you just want to cruise down the highway. A great choice at a great price for those of you after something subtle.

Manufacturer description: “Borla Performance has once again proven why we have a led the aftermarket performance exhaust industry for over 30 years. Borla Performance Industries; the original pioneers of high quality; austinetic stainless steel free flow exhaust utilizes patented award and race winning technology to deliver quality; sound; performance gains; and enhanced fuel economy. • Internal pipe diameter: 2.4″
  • Tailpipe configuration: Single 4.5″ tip
  • Primary exhaust system material: Stainless Steel
  • Fitment: Scion tC 2004-10
  • Manufacturer: APEXi
  • Value for money: 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Our comment: The N1 was the first exhaust to feature the classic angled muffler design which is so popular on tuned cars today. It’s survived the quest of time and still looks fantastic.

There’s no doubt that this cat-back is a bargain for a company with such a great reputation. Many owners love the N1, which provides a deep, mellow tone which is especially noticeable in the top range. A fantastic all-around choice for those looking for a quiet street cruiser that screams when you step on the gas.

Manufacturer description: “Born from APEXi’s involvement in the grueling N1 endurance series, the N1 Exhaust System pairs a straight through design racing muffler with free flowing, mandrel bent piping.”

“The combination has resulted in dyno proven horsepower and countless satisfied customers world wide. With a polished SUS 304 stainless steel canister and high temperature titanium particle coated mild steel piping. The N1 Exhaust is truly the benchmark in which others strive to duplicate.”

  • Internal pipe diameter: 2.4″
  • Tailpipe configuration: Single 4″ tip
  • Primary exhaust system material: Stainless Steel
  • Fitment: Scion tC 2004-10
  • Manufacturer: Injen
  • Value for money: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Our comment: We know you’re probably already struggling for choice, but we know we’ll probably get complaints if we don’t include Injen’s SES system in our guide too!

As you’ve probably guessed, the Injen SES is another popular choice. It features a nice, low growl which isn’t too loud for passing dB ratings or cabin noise. All-in-all, a solid choice, but we would prefer a cat-back alternative for similar money.

Manufacturer description: “Injen Technologys Super SES line of exhaust systems are dyno-tuned to compliment our performance intake systems; in doing so the Super SES provides maximum horsepower and torque across the power band. The Super SES exhaust system is manufactured from 100% 304 stainless steel. Each exhaust system features CNC mandrel-bent stainless steel tubing CNC machined flanges and robotic TIG welding.”

Revel (Formerly Tanabe) Medalion Touring Scion tC exhaust

revel tanabe medalion touring scion tc exhaust

  • Internal pipe diameter: 2.4″
  • Tailpipe configuration: Single 4″ tip
  • Primary exhaust system material: Stainless Steel
  • Fitment: Scion tC 2011-16
  • Manufacturer: Tanabe
  • Value for money: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Our comment: Revel (Formerly Tanabe)’s Medalion Touring has been an enormous success with owners of various cars, and the Scion tC is no exception.

The primary consideration with this exhaust is that it’s often known as the “Gentleman’s choice” because of its subtle looks and slightly louder than OEM, tasteful note.

Those looking to wake up the neighborhood every time they leave their house may want to look at alternatives, but as far as sensible options go, it doesn’t get much better.

Providing similar flow and performance to some of the louder exhausts on the market, this could make a perfect choice if you want a deep yet mellow tone from your exhaust.

We wouldn’t expect anything less than the finest quality and fitment despite the impressive price tag on this setup from Tanabe. A true bargain.

Manufacturer description:The Revel Medallion Touring-S exhaust system is constructed from full SUS304 stainless steel for corrosion resistance & durability, and 1.5mm wall thickness piping for increased strength and reduced resonation. The piping is also mandrel bent in order to retain the same piping diameter at the bends thus optimizing exhaust flow characteristings.

Straight through muffler design gives better flow for increased power and allows for a lighter weight system. Compact muffler canisters offer optimal ground clearance for lowered vehicles. In addition, the dual-wall angle cut tips have a large inner diameter for modern aesthetics and increased exit flow.

Our winner

It’s a tough decision with so many great exhausts on the market for Scion tC owners. There are some great setups at bargain prices if that’s what you’re looking for.

We just couldn’t ignore the sound, looks, and quality of the HKS Hi Power axle-back exhaust. With a mid-range price-point and the typical awesome quality that HKS provide, it ticks all the correct boxes.

We would like to remind you that exhausts are mostly down to personal preference and small performance gains will be had from all of these exhausts, so check out the look and then hit play on the videos to see which one is best for your needs.

hks scion tc exhaust

If we’re talking bang for your buck, Megan Racing offers a cat-back at just $445.00, which is hard to ignore. Be prepared for it to be a little on the loud side for a daily driver, though. For a cheap all-rounder, we’d be going for the APEXi N1 as they have a better reputation and it’s a fantastic product at just over $50 more than the Megan Racing.

Perhaps you’re looking for maximum noise to turn heads when you drive down the street? If so, you’ll want to check out the Magnaflow, as it’s definitely one of the louder choices.

For a quiet setup, there are several options, but we like the idea of sticking OEM+ with the clean and tidy TRD.

For many owners, the Scion tC is likely to be their first (of many) cars, and it’s the perfect opportunity to get a taste for tuning before the cost of running rear-wheel-drive cars becomes affordable.

At Drifted, we also tuned our FWD cars from the day we got our licenses, and it’s a fantastic opportunity to gain an understanding of how things work in a lower powered car.

If this is your first shot at tuning, we highly recommend you grab yourself these and an exhaust, then go ahead and fit them yourself (with help from a buddy if need be.) Not only is fitting parts yourself satisfying, but you’ll undoubtedly learn a whole lot more about your car and how everything works. This is where the soul of tuning lies.

Unlike exhausts, and other bolt-on parts, coilovers serve a variety of different purposes. Some people opt for coilovers to simply upgrade the OEM suspension or hit the track and improve their lap times, while others want to turn their tC into a frame-laying street scraper.

If you have any intention of getting the most out of what your tC has to offer, we highly recommend upgrading to coilovers.

As you’re about to see, coilovers come in a huge range of variety when it comes to quality and price. If you’re purely looking for a drop on your daily driver with some improved handling, some of the cheaper options are likely to be fine.

However, if you want to push your suspension to its limits, you’re definitely going to want to invest more money into your coilovers to save yourself having to upgrade yet again later down the line.

Coilovers are an upgrade that we, personally, don’t like to purchase used as the chances are you don’t know how they’ve been used. Get yourself a nice new set and treat them well, and we have no doubt they’ll last you for years to come.

What’s in this guide?

Whatever your purpose for opting for coilovers on your tC, we’ve selected a wide range to help you find the perfect setup, from budget through to premium.

For each coilover option, we also add our own comments. In addition, we have given a Drifted rating (1-5) based on features and price. We are considering budget, mid-range and high-end coilovers in this comparison.

Let’s take a look at our tC coilover selection

BC Racing BR Scion tC Coilovers

bc racing scion tc coilovers

Our comment: BC Racing bring one of the highest regarded affordable kits to the market with their ‘BR’ option. For under $1k, they’re quite possibly the best bang-for-your-buck choice.

Featuring great quality, ride comfort and an impressive amount of adjustability, they tick all of the right boxes for us.

If you’re looking for the ultimate lows from your BC coilovers, you’ll want to take a look at their RM Series Extreme Low range.

Manufacturer description:The components you use directly affect your vehicle’s performance, and that certainly includes your suspension system. These Scion tC coilovers are perfect for street driving and occasional road course duty.

With easily accessible adjustment knobs for fine tuning your compression and rebound, as well as separately adjustable ride heights, having a high-performance coilover system has never been easier.

TEIN Flex Z Scion tC Coilovers

tein scion tc coilovers

  • Manufacturer: TEIN
  • Levels of damping adjustment: 16
  • Construction type: Twin-tube
  • Spring rate front: 7kg/mm
  • Spring rate rear: 10kg/mm
  • Fitment: Scion tC
  • Value for money: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
  • Purchase links: TEIN Flex Z Scion tC 2005-10 coilovers

Our comment: Our second option, which once again falls under the $1,000 bracket comes from JDM suspension legends TEIN with their Flex Z kit.

Despite the price, these are made in Yokohama, Japan with TEIN’s exceptional eye for quality.

TEIN have managed to keep their costs down by making the body of these units a sealed structure, which means they’re not able to be rebuilt. However, rebuilding is extremely expensive and just replacing the whole unit is actually a great idea, especially at this value!

These are road orientated, but will no doubt be more than capable of some basic track days. These can also be hooked up to TEIN’s EDFC system, which allows you to adjust the damping levels from inside the car. Perfect for showing off and insanely convenient if you do a variety of driving. These are an exceptional all-rounder for the money!

Manufacturer description:TEIN Flex Z Coilovers are the latest in TEIN’s generation of high end coilovers. The difference with Flex Z is that you are getting a coilover that would normally cost almost double the price.

The new manufacturing systems that TEIN has put in place with this line of coilovers has allowed for them to produce these coilovers at a lower price and pass that savings on to you. Quality and performance remains top of it’s class and TEIN builds these Flex Z coilovers with the highest quality standards in Yokohama, Japan making these a true Japanese JDM coilover system.

Buddy Club Racing Spec Scion tC Coilovers

buddy club scion tc coilovers

Our comment: This is the first track-orientated setup in our guide so far, so be prepared for these to be on the harsher side if you plan to use them on a daily driver.

These are an ideal budget track option and we highly recommend going with the upgraded pillowball mounts. However, with the added price, we would prefer to opt for the KW V2’s for a better setup for all-around use.

Manufacturer description:The Buddy Club Racing Spec Damper has been developed based on the data collected from both actual race cars.

Depending on different applications, adequate spring rates, damping force adjustment, and enough damper strokes were all put in to consideration to create one of the best available and most balanced suspension systems for the drifting and circuit enthusiasts alike.

KW Variant 2 (V2) Scion tC Coilovers

kw scion tc coilovers

  • Manufacturer: KW

  • Construction type: Monotube
  • Spring rate front: 340lbs/in
  • Spring rate rear: 455lbs/in
  • Fitment: Scion tC
  • Value for money: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
  • Purchase links: KW Variant 2 (V2) Scion tC coilovers

Our comment: KW offer three variants in their coilover systems, and this KW V2 is their mid-range 2-way adjustable setup. This means that you’re able to adjust the ride height and the damping.

The German suspension legends are one of the highest regarded in the industry, and this is an incredible setup for the money, even if you’re using your tC as a daily and recreational track use.

KW are known for impeccable quality, and this kit is no different. If you live in an area which commonly has corrosion issues, you’ll be pleased to hear that these are made of Stainless Steel.

Manufacturer description:KW Suspension’s V2 Coilover System is a combination of performance lowering springs and sport tuned shock absorbers/dampeners. KW V2 Coilover Systems utilize a CNC machined, threaded strut body housing and adjustable spring perches, thereby allowing you to change your vehicle’s height within a specified adjustment range.

KW V2 Coilovers are suitable for all competitive drivers who want more than just a lower ride, but also a driver adjustable damping in rebound for a firmer or more comfortable ride.

  • Spring rate front: Various
  • Spring rate rear: Various

Our comment: ISC will happily provide their customers with any spring rates that they choose. This level of customization is great if you’re planning to spend most of your time either on the track, or the street.

These are a solid choice for the money, however, if you’re looking to spend less then they have an even cheaper alternative with their ISC Basic setup with solid top plates for 2005-10 owners.

Manufacturer description:The ISC N1 Coilover system is the optimum suspension tool for improved handling for your street, track, or drift car. KSport Kontrol Pro Scion tC Coilovers

k-sport scion tc coilovers

Our comment: KSport have a decent reputation among owners and their Kontrol Pro system is generally on the firmer side compared to most, even when fully adjusted. If you’re after a soft daily driving setup, we’d personally look at alternatives.

With that being said, these are still a nice kit with a high amount of adjustability. If you’re looking to spend a decent amount of time on the canyons or the track, these could be worth considering.

Manufacturer description:Ksport Kontrol Pro Fully Adjustable Coilover Kits provide the ultimate in suspension technology for your vehicle, both on the street or at the track. 36 levels of damping adjustment allow fine tuning of the damper to suit both handling and comfort needs. The damping adjustment alters compression and rebound simultaneously, for more effective and user-friendly setup changes.

The Ksport Kontrol Pro Coilover system has been designed with professional road racing in mind, offering extremely high value and performance for any application.

Megan Racing EZII Scion tC Coilovers

megan racing scion tc coilovers

  • Manufacturer: Megan Racing
  • Levels of damping adjustment: 15
  • Construction type: Monotube
  • Spring rate front: 8kg/mm
  • Spring rate rear: 10kg/mm
  • Fitment: Scion tC
  • Value for money: 🔥🔥
  • Purchase link: Megan Racing EZII Scion tC 2005-10 coilovers

Our comment: These coilovers are the second cheapest setup in our list that we’d recommend for tC owners. Megan Racing have managed to keep the costs down on their EZII series, while still offering full adjustability at a great price.

Opinions are always really mixed when it comes to Megan Racing and they seem to have somewhat of a love/hate reputation. For the money, there is little to compare with, however if you can stump up a little extra cash you’ll be able to afford a reasonable set with a better rep.

Manufacturer description:Megan Racing EZII Series coilover system is aimed towards the more budget oriented enthusiast to offer the most basic essentials from an after-market coil-over setup, yet makes no compromises for quality and performance.

15 Levels of Adjustable Damper Strength, Aluminum Brackets paired with rubber inserts, Rubber Dust Covers, Adjustable Ride Height, Conservative Spring Rates, Single-Cylinder Design – monotube, All coilover damper kits come with 1 year manufacture-defect warranty, All Hardware is Included.

Stance XR1 Scion tC Coilovers

stance scion tc coilovers

  • Manufacturer: Stance
  • Levels of damping adjustment: 16
  • Construction type: Monotube
  • Spring rate front: 7kg/mm
  • Spring rate rear: 9kg/mm
  • Fitment: Scion tC
  • Value for money: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
  • Purchase link: Stance XR1 Scion tC 2005-10 coilovers

Our comment: Stance certainly live up to their name when it comes to getting your tC hugging the ground, but don’t think that this will come at the expense of the handling and ride quality.

Sure, if you’re planning to have it slammed as far down as possible it’s going to be stiffer, but the XR1 offers a firm, but not crashy ride. These also come with optional swift springs, which is a highly recommended upgrade if your budget allows.

These are ideal for a build that’ll be a daily driver for hitting up the meets, but if you’re looking to head to the track then we’d recommend looking at the alternatives first to get the most out of your handling.

Manufacturer description:Suspension tuning is a sort of “black art”. Properly valving dampers is difficult to master and there are many variables involved in making the perfect suspension. We have acquired our knowledge through our involvement in all forms of motorsports. Vehicles using our custom valved dampers have excelled in drifting, time attack, drag racing, land speed, and hill climb. Drivers at the highest level of competition need maximum traction control, and that is what our Bespoke dampers provide.

The XR1 is our new flagship line of coilovers. Oversized diameter shocks allow large pistons for ultimate performance and response. 16-way adjustable dampening allows the driver to tune the shocks for any conditions and handling characteristics. With huge range of adjustment that can be felt and seen, it offers serious performance for all levels of drivers. Stance XR1 coilovers are built with highest quality materials and tolerances to ensure durability and performance.

Godspeed Mono-SS Scion tC Coilovers

godspeed scion tc coilovers

Our comment: You’re certainly going to struggle to find a decent coilover setup for cheaper than this Godspeed option! At just $630, it’s insane value for money, and they look awesome too.

Godspeed may have had a negative rep in the past, but we’ve heard they’ve upped their game for their recent products, and from the owners’ reviews we’ve heard so far, it certainly looks like things have improved.

Cheap isn’t always the best route to go down, but based on the feedback we’ve been given, these may well end up being a gamble that pays off. With that being said, if it was our choice, we’d personally save a little extra for a more tried and tested method.

Manufacturer description:Godspeed Project’s MonoSS is our one entity in our family of single-adjustable coilover suspension kits. These coilovers are designed to be a streetable race built coilover at an affordable price.

It features a monotube damper that is made out of a carbon seamless steel 52mm tube with a performance internal piston providing maximum damper response. The cold-bent springs are made from high strength SAE9252 steel to optimize the balance between performance and comfort.

Ohlins Road & Track Scion tC Coilovers

ohlins scion tc coilovers

  • Manufacturer: Ohlins
  • Levels of damping adjustment: 20
  • Construction type: Monotube
  • Spring rate front: 4.08kg/mm
  • Spring rate rear: 3.06kg/mm
  • Fitment: Scion tC
  • Value for money: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
  • Purchase link: Ohlins Road & Track Scion tC 2005-10 coilovers

Our comment: Here’s the boss of our coilover guide, but it certainly comes at a price, especially when you realize that this doesn’t include top mounts, either.

However, quality does come at a price and these are the ultimate setup for those of you that throw down serious laps in the track and then expect to drive your tC back home in comfort at the end of the day. Like the KW’s, these are also corrosion-proof, which is extremely convenient as they won’t seize like some of the cheaper kits might.

On the road, they’ll feel firmer than stock but with their Dual Flow Valve technology, it’ll absorb the bumps well to ensure a smooth ride. You really won’t find a better setup than this, and if you have the cash available, this will undoubtedly be the ultimate kit for your needs.

Manufacturer description:This is the latest step in the Öhlins Racing automotive philosophy – Road & Track by Öhlins. A more than 30 year long tradition of high-end racing commitments and state-of-the-art solutions within advanced suspension technology is now available for street cars all over the world.

The focus has been clear from the very beginning – superior road handling without sacrificing comfort in your day-to-day transports. The time of compromises are over! We have also added a clever light-weight design with a majority of the parts in aluminium and on top of that all shocks have suffered through vast corrosion tests according to ISO 9227. The end result is a 2-year limited warranty on all of our products – worldwide.

Our winner

Our winner is the epic KW Variant 2 (V2) coilovers.

They may not have the adjustability of the Ohlins Road & Track, but they come at a far more affordable price with KW’s typically perfected quality.

KW Variant 2 (V2) Scion tC Coilovers

kw scion tc coilovers

If you have the money to splash, we’d go with the Road & Track, however, as an all-rounder for everyday use, the KW’s are far more affordable for everyday buyers. We have absolutely no doubt that the KW V2 will serve you well on the street, or the track!

Runner-up

TEIN has been around in the JDM tuning scene since the beginning of time, yet their products keep evolving to match the high standards we expect from them. At under $1k, these really are an absolute steal for the money and we’d more than happily rock these if we were on a budget.

If you don’t have the money now, you could always upgrade to the EDFC at a later date so that you can show off while you adjust your damping from inside the car. We love cool features like this!

TEIN Flex Z Scion tC Coilover Kit

tein scion tc coilovers

If you’re on a really tight budget, we recommend that you take a look at the Godspeed Mono-SS and see what you think. There’s no question that it’s a fantastic price but it’s important that parts like these are made to last, so it’s well worth doing some thorough research: Godspeed Mono-SS Scion tC Coilover Kit
